DEEP DARK & DANGEROUS x SENTRY RECORDS - LIVE AT OUTLOOK 2019
Next up in our live recordings from Outlook 2019 is a selection of sets from the Deep, Dark & Dangerous x Sentry Records takeover in the Void featuring LOST, Distinct Motive & Khiva and Cimm b2b Sukh Knight ft Logan.
We also have an exclusive mix from Deep Dark & Dangerous label founders Truth. We caught up with them to discuss what they’ve been up to during isolation, what it was like to be a part of last year’s final edition at the fort and what 2020 has in store for them and the label. Check it out below:
1. Along with others from the Deep, Dark and Dangerous community, you’ve been stepping up to the decks yourself to give devoted fans their fix of bass in isolation. Other than rolling mixes for live streams how have you been keeping your own spirits up in this time where public life is on lockdown ?
TRUTH: We do our best to keep to a solid schedule - things have actually been pretty busy for us so that helps to stay focused and positive. Getting up earlier than usual, getting some decent exercise & fresh air. Learning new stuff. Definitely lots of studio time which has been nice. Tristan has the kids at home now too, so that’s busy too of course. Lot’s of board games.
But for real, one the biggest mental health boosts has been connecting with everyone via the live streams - it’s been keeping the community & everything feeling connected. The label is going well too!
2. The Quarantine sessions have members of the Deep, Dark and Dangerous family from around the world, (USA, New Zealand and Canada, Japan) engaging with the fans in this time that we all have to stay indoors. Do you feel you’ve seen a strong sense of camaraderie from the music community in general in these uncertain times?
TRUTH: The Quarantine Sessions have truly been a global experience with performances so far from Sweden, Japan, The USA, New Zealand, Canada and the UK. It's something positive we can focus on in this time of so much uncertainty. There's definitely a massive sense of community and camaraderie across the music scene as a whole, this was one of the early industries to be heavily impacted with most people involved seeing a 100% reduction in their income and general future prospects. The collective attitude seems to be “this is tough, but we will get through it if we help each other out”, and there have been lots of examples of different artists and other members of the music community pulling together to do just that. We're certainly not alone, much of the world's population are in the same boat. Our main goal with Quarantine Sessions, and our livestreams in general is to give our fans and followers something to keep themselves entertained, inspired to be creative, connected with each-other, and generally keeping sane!
3. Can you tell us a little bit about the takeover last year between DDD and Sentry and being part of the final session at the fort... It's a partnership that has united at the festival a couple of times now, what do you think makes the two brands so compatible?
TRUTH: Over the years we have collaborated with Sentry Records and Contact (both run by our good friend DJ Youngsta) on Outlook boat parties and stage takeovers. Aside from being really great friends with Yunx, he was one of the pillars championing our music when Dubstep went through it’s lull stage via his Rinse FM shows and signing many releases to Tempa. He is also part of the Shadow People project and we wrote & released our debut album together which was released on Deep, Dark & Dangerous two years ago. It was really special to be a part of Outlook’s last year at the fort! Outlook festival has always been meeting grounds for seekers from all around the world. So combining stages with another like minded crew makes sense! For us, Outlook is that time of year where we can get together and catch up with the rest of the Dubstep scene and old friends, we love it!
4. You decided to record a mix for us alongside the live sets being released this week to keep things fresh - can you tell us a little bit about the mix and the tracks/artists included here? Was the mix recorded with isolation in mind - or have you drawn for the weapons that have slayed on countless occasions at the festival?
TRUTH: The mix is full of unreleased exclusives from us along with unreleased music from artists on the DDD label including Khiva, Angelic Root and JLeon to name a few. We also mixed in some Truth classics for the journey. We wanted this mix to be something fresh and special, representing the full spectrum of Dubstep within the Deep, Dark & Dangerous soundscape that people can play to get hyped in anticipation for the festival, but also something that will remain a classic mix for years to come.
5. What's up next for Deep Dark and Dangerous - we've seen new releases are on the horizon (alongside some very slick merch) - has isolation completely halted things or are there movements being made behind the scenes?
TRUTH: The label is full steam ahead, always, no matter what. People need the music now more than ever, even if it can’t be played out or enjoyed at gigs! We just released a Trilogy DDD compilation on vinyl, a two-tracker by Khiva (Chuckles Revenge // From The Dirt). We have an album dropping from Onhell soon. And then we will be releasing an EP bi-monthly from various old & new DDD artists over the next few months! We are very excited about everyone signed.Aside from label releases, we plan to continue to grow our community on Twitch. Lot’s of sick new content in the works for the streams as well as revisiting Truth classics. People can tune into our 24/7 DDD stream, Truth Tuesdays, and Quarantine Sessions every Saturday hosting a fresh lineup of talent & friends from around the world. We actually just started running old TRUTH music videos and our mini-documentary on the streams, and that has been a lot of fun!
Big up! Yeah the merch has been steady! Every day we try to come up with new ideas and see them through. We just released a limited run of military grade crossbody bags that were a huge hit and sold out right away. Keep an eye out on our Deep Dark & Dangerous shop socials, we have new drops all the time! 👊
